Poetry to my ears

Today is World Poetry Day and the occasion might have totally passed me by had it not been for Masterpiece Theatre’s Facebook page posting about it earlier in the week. Now I’m a simplistic sort of soul when it comes to this art form since I couldn’t abide it in my school years and only really started enjoying bits and pieces a few years ago — a few beautiful recitations in movies (of course all by the Brits) actually opened my mind. I want to relate to the words immediately and I love it when it says something better than I ever could, or expresses something so perfectly that you have to refer to it instead of your own words (litmus test: it makes me cry from one emotion or another). One of my best friends from college is a poet and she wrote a poem about me as a graduation present. It’s hilariously and lovingly accurate. I cried when she gave it to me (success!). My definition of poetry is also a little elastic; to me, it’s not just the written word, but also song lyrics. So with all that in mind here are some of my favorite bits of poetry. What are yours? Leave us a comment! xx

Funeral Blues by W.H. Auden in Four Weddings and Funeral

Sonnet 116 by Shakespeare in Sense & Sensibility

Stop This Train by John Mayer

Sunday Kind of Love by Etta James
