Happy birthday to the Duchess

Happy birthday to one fine lady. From being constantly poised, to introducing the world to her nude LK Bennett heels, we admire her from head to toe. She proves that there is royalty in all of us and it pays off to always act like a lady. In her case it earned her a crown, in ours it may get us a free glass of wine at the local bistro. Which is better? That’s debatable.

But we do hope that she uses the f-word behind closed doors at least occasionally. We won’t count it against her.

Tartan trumps tinsel

OK, so you’re all spruced up and now it’s time for thematic touches. This year I’m all about tartan patterns all over the house from the bow on my wreath to what I sleep in. It conjures warmth and coziness, ergo Christmas, and I’m a sucker for the aristocratic origins. Some patterns have more obvious “Christmas” colors than others (Royal Stewart), but I’m also partial for the Black Watch (above). Kate’s dress was the tipping point (and let’s not even go into the baby news here, needless to say I’m so excited it’s embarrassing).

A note on terminology: in the US, tartan and plaid are pretty much interchangeable, which I’m sure is giving my Scottish brother-in-law waves of nausea. In his honor, here is the traditional difference between tartan and plaid for your edification. You learn something new everyday – a plaid is a kind tartan but a tartan is not a plaid.

Moving on. Here’s some tartan inspiration…

Happy Anniversary!

It’s been a year officially since Kate decided to embark on the royal road. Bless her. I get stressed out by doing laundry let alone meeting with diplomats. Will should be very happy he found a woman up to the task who also has a killer set of legs. Happy anniversary to a beautiful couple whose wedding I can watch time and time again with a glass of champagne. And damn you woman… you’ll make me a get a pair nude heels.

All the ways in which we love Kate

We all have our great attributes – and better ‘sides’ for photos – and naturally we have our flaws too and (try to) accept them in stride. But some women are lucky, and well-maintained enough, to be pretty darn close to perfect, i.e. La Duchesse Kate (at least in the physical sense from what we can tell from photos on HuffPo. We would love to verify with an in-person encounter). Of course this lady gets rewarded by being turned into legit royalty. Now we’re not huge on celeb gossip (A doesn’t know who half the reality TV people in People are and M doesn’t even have cable), but when it comes to crowns and gowns, we’re tracking. We were the crazies up at 4 a.m. to watch the live broadcast of her wedding. Yup, that happened (I was so f-ing tired that day at work that I get woozy just thinking about it).

She’s utterly elegant. It comes from a combination of genuine niceness, poise, simple and classic wardrobe, topped off with enviable grooming (those blow-outs….! If our hair was done everyday we would feel like future Queens too).

Kate is our all-time favorite and new role model (from a distance). For a ‘commoner’, she’s just perfect for her new role. Groomed to perfection with impeccable gown choices, we just wish we could wear Alexander McQueen every time we went out. Always simple, never overstated, and an enviable figure are the recipe for a duchess. Or maybe a good hostess? We just need to strike gold.
